Electricity from the desert
Solar power plants in deserts can be envisaged long-term for future energy supplies. Calculations show that in the Sahara about 315,000 TWh of solar electricity (about 500 times more than is consumed in Germany p.a.) could be produced each year, about 67,000 TWh in the Gobi desert and about 6,000 TWh in the Sonora desert (source www.iea-pvps.org). Since the solar electricity is generated far away from the consumers, an innovative transport system or the conversion into transportable energy sources (e.g. hydrogen) is also part of the overall concept.
